I was watching a documentary late one night, a while back, about Janis Joplin. I was so deeply involved with her performance and the music and it just hit me, that as an artist, this was something I needed to translate to canvas. I needed to paint this visceral experience. Music is very important to me and has long played a very serious role in my life. These artist I am painting have personal meaning to me. I didn't just choose them because of a commercial appeal. By all means, it is quite the opposite...I am all about the art.
I found this great old obscure photo of Jimi in a book store and thought, this is it. this is the Jimi I know and love, with that little sly twinkle in his eyes...I felt I needed to capture that "smile" in his eyes, that's what I call it, and it became my main goal, and just so you know, it wasn't so easy. Then one day, without prompting from me, someone actually used those exact words when they commented on my work, "you got that smile in his eyes". I stood there with my mouth hanging open, I can't describe how those words felt to me. It was simply the best validation of my work.
Jimi also just happens to be holding a cigarette, as was his nature. As was the nature, on a whole, of that culture at that time. Talk show hosts with their guests, commercials, etc....it was acceptable. It's a generation and a time, a culture, I am attempting to capture in my work. It's a memory and feeling so many people are responding to again, through my work, (FYI- I in no way endorse smoking)
I believe I am honoring Jimi with this painting. I believe I'm honoring all of these tremendous talents and personalities I have painted and am sharing with you.
I came from that time in our culture, our world, when it was the best time in Rock n Roll, without question....I'm just doing my part to keep the "Rock" alive...thank you for the trip down memory lane....and what a long strange trip it's been.....Love, Peace, and Music...June
